DRYTEK SkimcoatDRYTEK® SKIMCOAT is a premium quality, fast-drying underlayment designed for skim-coating, smoothing and leveling prior to the application of floor coverings. The ideal choice for quick repairs of existing floors. Excellent for use over most substrates, including concrete, wood, vinyl, ceramic and quarry tile. Designed for hand application only.

PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS

  • Apply at a thickness of skim coat to 1/2”
  • Walkable in 20-30 minutes, most finished floor goods can be applied as soon as 30 minutes, depending on thickness
  • Coverage: approximately 450-550 sq.ft. at skimcoat depth per 10 lb bag
  • Fast-drying
  • Suitable surface for even the most demanding floor coverings, such as sheet vinyl, VCT, etc.
  • No priming necessary
  • Inorganic; will not contribute to or harbor growth of mold or mildew
  • Will not contribute to damaging emissions or irritating fumes upon setting or curing
  • Provides alkali barrier when applied at a minimum thickness of 1/16”

ACCEPTABLE SUBSTRATES / PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS

PREPARATION OF SUBSTRATE

Substrate shall be free from dust, oil or any contaminants which may contribute to decreased bond. Weak surfaces must be mechanically cleaned to sound and solid substrates by shot-blasting, scarifying or similar. Remove any loose particles. Surface bond strength of substrate should be minimum 72 PSI (0.5 MPa). Substrate temperature should be a minimum 43°F (+6°C) during application and air temperature maintained between 50-77°F (10-25°C). Adequate ventilation should be provided to ensure uniform drying. Felt-backed floor coverings should be removed prior to application of DRYTEK.

MIXING

DRYTEK® SKIMCOAT should be mixed with 2 qts. of water per 10 lb. bag. For smaller batches mix 2 parts powder to 1 part water. Do not over water. For best results, mix 2-3 minutes with heavy duty drill.

APPLICATION

Apply blended material to substrate at a thickness of skim coat depth to 1/2” (1-10 mm) for all surfaces. After initial set of material, remove all overlap marks, seams and inconsistencies by scraping with steel trowel. Material can be walked on after 20-30 minutes.

FLOORING INSTALLATION

Finished floor goods can be applied to surface 1/2 hour after application depending on thickness, drying conditions and type of finished floor. Due to the relatively low pH level of DRYTEK floor leveling products, finished floor goods can be applied rapidly without risk of adhesive bond failure. As a general rule, permeable materials such as carpeting may be adhesively or mechanically applied to DRYTEK underlayments when RH level of substrate (i.e. concrete slab, etc) is 95% or below. RH levels should be determined according to ASTM standard F2170. Always test performance suitability and compatibility of finished floor systems prior to their application. Sample surfaces should be installed as a field test so as to be representative of entire surface and tested for intended use. Always refer to finished floor manufacturers recommendations regarding installation instructions, restrictions and compatibility.

LIMITATIONS

For indoor applications only. Not for applications exposed to continuous water of intrusion. Not for applications exposed to continuous contact with water.

WARNING: Dust may cause skin, eye, nose, throat, or respiratory irritation. Avoid dust inhalation and exposure to dust. If dusty, wear a NIOSH/MSHA-approved dust respirator. Use proper ventilation to reduce dust exposure. Portland cement is strongly alkaline and can be corrosive to eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Wear eye and skin protection. If eye contact occurs, immediately flush thoroughly with water for 15 minutes and get medical attention. Do not ingest. If ingested and any discomfort occurs, call physician.
